Ways to Assess My Health Without the Scale

Let's ditch the scale for this one, shall we?

First things first, the scale is no indication of health. While a normal range BMI is healthy, yes, BMI does not take into account muscle density vs fat density etc. There are FAR MORE productive ways to assess your health than that.

One of my closest friends always said her reason for wanting to get in shape was so that she could get out of bed and not break a hip when she was older. She is seeing how her own mother is suffering as she ages and wants to break that cycle for herself.

One question to ask yourself is this: “Am I physically able to do the things that I want to do?”

Things like playing outside with your kids, hiking, gardening.

Being physically active does not mean you need to spend hours in the gym every week. It could be something as simple as stretching for 20 minutes a day (Hello, desk job people!). And while being physically active is a key part in your health, I’d be remiss if I didn’t speak to your mental and spiritual health.

How is your mindset?

One of the GREATEST things my husband helped me discover was how much of what I said was negative. He said it to me often and I just didn't see it at first and then it was like a flick of switch one day and ever since then I’ve been so mindful about not only what I’m saying out loud, but my thoughts too. Negative mental chatter gets LOUD. How do you clear it?

I love going for walks with my pup and listening to a podcast, sometimes I love going for a run to get my lungs burning, because those burning lungs turn into all I can think about. A lot of times I like to put music on, burn some sage and feel whatever it is that I want to feel. A lot of times that turns into tears, but they’re not always sad tears. It’s just an emotional release that feels OH SO JUICY after. Like a thousand pounds is lifted off your shoulders.

Here are some other great questions to ask yourself to assess your health without the scale:

  1. How is your sleep?

  2. How much water are you drinking a day?

  3. Am I feeling accomplished?

  4. How are your energy levels?

  5. What is my stress level?

  6. Am I choosing nutrient dense foods?

  7. How is your endurance/resiliency? Are your workouts getting easier?
